"Matitojo Stud" is located in Northern Victoria, one kilometre west off the Northern Highway, 5 minutes north of Rochester and 15 minutes south of Echuca on the Murray River.
The stud was first established with the purchase of "Matitojo Golden Dawnie", who became the foundation mare for the stud. "Dawnie" was sired by "Raleigh Park Silver King", a Palomino stock horse stallion who was owned by Mr Des O'Donohue of Kamarooka in central Victoria. "Silver King" was by the very well known and successful stallion, "Silver Chief" who was sired by "Desert Chief" and out of the very good mare "Silver Dollar". "Desert Chief" was by "East Lyn". Two generations further back is "Lord Rosby", a Thoroughbred stallion. Also in this bloodline is "Helios", an arabian stallion imported from India in 1900. There are several more crosses to both purebred and part arabian bloodlines within "Silver Kings" breeding which could account for the sometimes arab characteristics that appeared on "Dawnies" progeny.
"Dawnies" dam was "MacEwans Girl", a chestnut mare of unknown breeding, but thought to have been from old station stock. This could account for the incredibly hard hooves and good clean skins that "Dawnie" always put on her foals.
"Dawnie" was put down several years ago after suffering a severe colic attack at the age of 27. She foaled every year of her breeding life except for 1983 which was the drought year.
Her kind and gentle temperament and excellent golden colour lives on in her son, the stud's resident stallion "Matitojo Sherzawn" and in her very last daughter, "Matitojo Dawnies Girl".
A few years after Golden Dawnie's arrival the opportunity came to purchase a palomino weanling filly from Penrith, Sydney. This filly was by the lovely purebred arab stallion "Zourrak." Her name is "Balamara Arabian Sunshine" and she has given us many champion foals and recently passed away at the age of 28.
